The Gayest Thing(s) You'll See This Week

I must admit that despite being "wired in," I am not actually current on most popular music. Yes, I know the names and the styles (usually), but am not always familiar with the actual music, itself.

Now you have to understand, my rather extensive CD collection is comprised of mostly film scores and soundtracks, followed closely by Original Cast Recordings, Cirque du Soliel scores and other odd bits of epehemeral weirdness. Of course, my collection contains many standards and must-haves (everything from Beethoven and Mozart to Pink Floyd and The Beatles and almost anyone in between - with the exception of most CW and almost all Rap). I have CDs by The Who; Elton John; Olivia Newton John; Madonna; Frankie Goes to Hollywood; The B52's; Devo; Loreena McKennitt; Cyndi Lauper; Annie Lennox; James Brown; Tom Jones; Dead Can Dance; Pet Shop Boys; NIN; Peter Gabriel; October Project... the list goes on and on.

Sadly, I find few modern pop artists interesting in the least. But lately I've been reading lots and lots about Brooklyn-based, openly gay band Grizzly Bear. I hadn't heard any of their music until I stumbled upon the below link (via). It's fan-made video (by a str8 fan) for the song "Two Weeks" and is just a gorgeous, surreal, Steampunk-Papercraft-Puppet-Animation gay love story. And the song ain't too shabby. Excuse me while I peruse the Grizzly Bear catalogue and please enjoy the video while I do so:

Two Weeks - Grizzly Bear from Gabe Askew on Vimeo.

OK. Entertainment out of the way, it's on to politics. Also via, comes the following clip of National Organization for Marriage (NOM) spokesperson Nancy Gallagher being ripped to pieces by CNN's Lou Dobbs and University of Pennsylvania Law Professor Tobias Wolf. I love how, like everyone else who opposes same-sex marriage, Gallagher cannot come up with suitable answer as to how same-sex marriage affects and/or attacks hetero-marriage. Watch the bitch squirm here:

Sorry, I forgot. Oded Gross already told us how:

Yeah, THAT's the ticket!

More, anon.

Teabagging parties around America

These days there's a funny movement spreading around America - the teabagging rightwing movement. To explain to the non-Americans: It is supposedly a gathering of people who don't like a black man in the oval office. Read more here [blogger interrupted].

Vocab: Tebagging - [by Wiki 1] is a slang term for the act of a man placing his scrotum in the mouth or on or around the face (including the top of the head) of another person, often in a repeated in-and-out motion as in irrumatio. The practice vaguely resembles dipping a tea bag into a cup of tea. - [by UB 2] A conservative republican who protests against income taxes by rubbing their nutsacks in each other's faces.

Let's hope the teabagging movement keeps going. It is the Big ol' partie's sad epilogue, but at same time it's also hillarious. So we wouldn't wanna miss it in the future.

Obama is a genius!

My whole last year 2008 was accompanied with excitement about the US presidential elections and Barack Obama. I can say, I heard about him already in 2006 when he went to Kenya and CNN reported it. One year later, in 2007, I watched on CNN how he announced his presidential campaign. And they began to report more and more about him and I already became a huge fan. At that time, everyone was excited about Hillary Clinton. Most of the meadia thought she already won, but not me. I knew Barack Obama was the best candidate with the best ideas that reflected my views and conceptions. I didn't doubt Obama, I doubted the American people due to the recent history of racism and the dominance of the right wing (that's was the perception). Anyway, luckily I was proven wrong and Obama was elected. It was a roller coaster: From Iowa to the Supertuesday to the debates with Hillary Clinton. Then came Bill Clinton's 'Fairytale', reverend Wright, 'Bittergate', Pennsyilvania and a lot of distress. Was I relieved when he won North Carolina and virtually wrapped up the nomination. I was so sick of those CNN pundits and all their bickering and ridiculing. I got goose bumps when I saw him in Denver in that big stadium. Joe Biden was a great choice, too. It seemed perfect. And then came McCain and the Republicans with their low shots and of course the joke of the year: Sarah Palin, her stupidity and ignorance. It was hillarious. I loved the presidential debates with McCain. Obama showed that he has an exceptional intellect. And then: election night! When he got Pennsylvania and Florida I knew he won. I waited until 4am to hear him speak. That speech was really history made infront of my eyes. I will always remember where I was when I heard it. I felt I was there in Chicago, I felt I was American and all the positive things that are associated with it. I felt that in 1 single day the world became a better place.
And now here we are. It's March 2009 and I tune in CNN and see president Barack Obama has a town hall meeting, answering questions and trying to increase support for his bold policies. After the election and until the inauguration I was in Malaysia and couldn't follow his interviews and all that was happening in that period. So tonight I heard him speak after a long time and I thought: Wow, he is a genius! In this moment I think there's not a single democratic politician in the world who is as intelligent, witted and articulate as Barack Obama. He could sell you any idea by the way he delivers it to you. It's still incredible, it won't decline and I think even after he will face tough backfire, make mistakes, he will give a speech and you will believe him or forgive him. Barack Obama is a genius. He will transform the presidency like Lincoln or FDR did. He won't be topped in my life time, he set the bar too high for any successor, it's a once-in-a-century thing. That's why, even in these hard times, recesion, terrorism, financial crisis... I know we (the whole world) have someone who's honestly working the hardest he can to make a difference. It's a great time to be alive.

The 44th President of the United States

So, there he is. The new president with the new first lady. The inauguration is over, people are relieved that W is history now. He won't call the shots anymore. New pragmatism, new progressive approach - that's what we need now. The world needs America as a role model, not as a world bully. Please, mr. President, make this world a bit of a better place. We'll see what will change in 4 years. Good luck!

The world looks so much better now

Wow... was quite a ride... what to say... a huge relief after Barack Obama won. Seems like history was written and the whole world was excited about America. We haven't seen that for quite a long time. It really makes me happy. I was so long interested in this process. It was amazing to see all the highs and lows. But most of all, it was a great story. I'm sure one day somebody will shoot a movie on Barack Obama's incredible victory. I wish him best of luck and may he help the world to become a better place.

Victory for Barack Obama!

Finally!!! It happened beyond our wildest dreams! Barack Obama won the elections on 2008 and he will be the next president of the USA. I am so proud of the US people and I really don't know, if it's more of a Obama victory or a more of a victory of the American people.
I was awake all night, I watched CNN and some other programmes... It was just incredible, when we saw how he took Pennsylvania, Ohio... I almost thought this is it! But I was still sceptical... When i saw his lead in Florida, I was confident! He exceeded all expectations - it was a landslide victory. And his speach was breath taking. A moment we will always remember. America is truly a land of opportunity and equality, you just need to work hard, be honest and have ideas. He beat the establishment of his own party and the best candidate of his rival's party. I can't fully grasp what this win means. It has to sink in...
I also need to praise McCain for his marvellous concession speech. He showed his real face, that's the McCain we missed in these months. You can clearly see how relieved he was, how gracious and humble. I hope he will have a long life. He's a great American. Unfortunately, his campaign sucked, had too many lows, too little highs.
I'm also happy that there's no more Sarah Palin. She was really a disgrace for this year of change. This was McCain's biggest mistakes. People were more scared of Palin than Obama.
And now, I hope America can head into a new direction of working together with the rest of the world, solving global problems together, ending wars and restoring confidence in the West.

Good luck!

I still can't be sure that Obama will win

I am not sure what to think lately... The McCain pack is trying it's hardest to label Obama with all kind of nonsense. Republican smear tactics as usual. It seems that the American people are strongly leaning towards Obama. On the other hand, I saw on TV a guy said he knows many people have lied to the pollsters. And he was expecting a big surprise. We're talking about the Bradley effect. I can say it loud and clear now: If Obama is not elected, it's because of racism! It's no other possible reason to lose at this time. You have the economy crushed, you have a dumb Sarah Palin and an old confused John McCain, virtually with same policies as Bush. So, what can make Obama lose? Racism. Simple as that. This would be devastating for America and it's standing in the world. People are not enthusiastic about McCain, to say the least. And Sarah Palin terrifies the world. Please, Americans, elect a smart president! After you saw what a dumb one can do to the USA and the rest of the world. Please! I beg you all! Go and vote, don't be lazy on tuesday! This is my small contribution to this process. I just hope I'm proven wrong and Obama wins! Hope is the only thing we can have now. Hope.

McCain is desperate and ugly!

The US presidential campaigns go toward it's end, yet McCain's new tactics are some sleazy personal attacks on Barack Obama. He was able to rally some angry mobs that are predominately racist and dumb (You can only see rural or small town white people, check this blogger from Ohio). When Obama had 250.000 people gather in Berlin, was as if America is reborn as the leader of the free world, allowing a person regardless of his race or background, to reach the highest office, with his intellect and great judgement. We were all drunk here in Europe. What we didn't see was small town Americans like in Ohio. People who call senator Obama terrorist, scumbag and other nasty things. It just made me sad. I really really hope that this kind of Americans are dying out. I hope it is a minority. Yet, I remain pessimistic. Barack is black and many people just can't vote for him. Which is extremely ignorant and dumb, but America is a divided country. Now we will see how many of these white Americans will be voting for McCain. We shall see.
And since Palin and McCain began these personal attacks, many rightwing blogs or online news jump on this train and stress how important it was with whom Barack was hanging out. I found a very good comment on that and I like to share it here.

What if things were switched around?.....think about it. Would the country's collective point of view be different? Ponder the following:

Obama/Biden vs. McCain/Palin

2) What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the
stage, including a five month old infant and an unwed,
pregnant teenage daughter?

3) What if John McCain was a former president of the
Harvard Law Review and Barack Obama finished fifth from
the bottom of his graduating class?

4) What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was
a divorcee?

5) What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife
after a severe disfiguring car accident?

6) What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had
a long affair while he was still married?

7) What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became
addicted to painkillers but also acquired them illegally
through her charitable organization?

8) What if Cindy McCain had graduated from Princeton
and Harvard Law School?

9) What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money
from beer distribution?

10) What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five?

11) What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

12) What if Obama couldn't read from a teleprompter?

13) What if Obama was the one who had military experience
that included discipline problems and a record of crashing
seven planes?

14) What if Obama was the one who was known to display
publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management
problem?

15) What if the Obamas had adopted a white child?

You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as they are? To not vote Obama because he's "too liberal" and his policies don't reflect your positions are fine. But if you're voting on someone's character, biography, and who you believe they essentially are, then what does this mean? This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

Yes we did it!

Finaly!!!! Barack Obama made it! He clinched the nomination of the Democratic party. America is finally back on track. Congratulations! This exciting roller coaster finally came to a stop. I've been paying close attention to this race since the beginning. Nobody would expect such a dramatic race with so many ups and downs and partly it really got ugly. This is now forgotten. Justice prevailed, the rules weren't changed to serve Hillarie's intentions. Now let's start bringing people together, America, and elect an intelligent and diverse president. The rest of the world begs you. Let's end the Bush-blunder once and for all. Good luck!

Yes, we can!

Finally!!! Barack Obama managed to stop Hillary Clinton's momentum and won North Carolina primaries by a huge margin (14%) and lost insignifically in Indiana (less than 2%), which puts him back on track. The Clinton media-machine can twist the numbers, portray her as having a chance of winning. But math is math and many people are now realizing: She can't catch up and she can't change the rules now, when she's so desperate to win. She will tear apart the party and I think even her supporters won't go so far, to support this divisive tactics. It just won't work! In Indiana she won with the help of rural white conservatives and with republicans, who want to weaken the Democratic party. It's a dirty game and she definitely lost all chances. The only thing she can do is leave with dignity. She will run out of money and lose her face even more. Please, unite behind Barack and change America. Because the rest of the world needs a change, too!

Funny comment on Hillary Clinton

So, Hillary Clinton won the Pennsylvania primary, but she has no chance of winning the nomination, the only thing she can do is to destroy Barack Obama's image. Good job, Hillary! Divide the party and the American people just for your own interest. So later John McCain will have half of the work done with your help. This whole blunder is better described by Roger Simon on Politico, I really enjoyed it. So can you. Have a look.

Don't stop believin', Hillary

By | 4/24/08 5:05 AM EST (www.politico.com)

Run, Hillary, run. Run in Guam, run in North Carolina, run in Indiana. Run in each and every one of the nine contests that are left. Then make some states do their contests over. Should Barack Obama’s victory in Vermont really count? I don’t think Vermont is actually a state. I think it is technically a socialist republic. Have somebody check this out. And Obama’s victory in Alaska? Are you kidding me? They let caribou vote in Alaska. And do some other stuff that levels the playing field: Raise the voting age to 65 in all the remaining contests, for instance. You do great with this group, Sen. Clinton. Younger people don’t really care about who becomes president anyway. All they want to do is go on this World Wide Interweb thing that they keep talking about. And while you are at it, Senator, cap all salaries at $50,000 a year, take away all college degrees and give everybody a gun. The demographics are clear: That is your base vote. Also, no men get to vote unless they have a note from a woman saying they are mentally competent. (Good luck with that!) And, Sen. Clinton, keep portraying yourself as a sympathetic underdog. That works much better than when you were the inevitable overlord. In Haverford, Pa., last Thursday, you told the crowd: “Just knock on the door and say, ‘You know, she’s really nice.’ Or you could say it another way: ‘She’s not as bad as you think.’” It is a theme that worked in Pennsylvania and will work elsewhere. I can see the billboards now: “Hillary Clinton. Not as Bad as You Think.” But do not give up the kitchen sink stuff, Senator. Make it a Good Hillary/Bad Hillary kind of campaign. Good Hillary talks about the dreamy, gooey, feel-good stuff, like when, in your victory speech from Philadelphia Tuesday night, you said: “We are, in many ways, all on this journey together to create an America that embraces every last one of us. ... I believe with all of my heart that together we will turn promises into action, words will become solutions, hope will become reality.” But Bad Hillary can’t go away. You have to have the Hillary who says Obama is “elitist” and “demeaning,” and you have to keep running ads that portray him as the guy who won’t be able to protect us from the Great Depression, Pearl Harbor, long lines at the gas pump, Osama bin Laden or ringing telephones. And speaking of Osama bin Laden, isn’t he a Muslim? And didn’t Bad Hillary say Obama was not a Muslim “as far as I know”? Keep up that subtle stuff. It is gold. And then, of course, bribe the superdelegates. These are the 794 party insiders who have one standard for all their decisions in life: “What’s in it for me?” So offer them something. You know how many interstate rest stops there are? They have to be named for somebody. And promise the holdouts that they will be appointed ambassador to Bermuda. It doesn’t matter that they all can’t be ambassador to Bermuda, because we don’t have an ambassador to Bermuda. (Say it was Bill’s idea.) And even if you can’t get ahead in the delegate count, don’t stop running! Go to the convention in Denver and chain yourself to the front door of the Pepsi Center and refuse to leave unless every resident of Florida and Michigan — not just the rogue delegates but all 26 million residents! — is seated inside and gets to cast a ballot for you. What’s the worst that could happen? Howard Dean comes out and bites you on the ankle? Forget about it. I could carve a tougher guy out of tofu. But most of all, Sen. Clinton, never give up, never surrender. And remember: There’s always 2012.

Battle Royale: Obama vs. Clinton

As some of you have noticed, I'm very interested in the upcoming US elections and especially the primaries. And lately I thought about what's more significant: USA having the first (white) female president or first afro-american president (actually he's half white, but that's another topic to discuss). However, I think America would write history if Barack Obama became the next president. I thought there was many female presidents before, the most famous were british Margaret Thatcher, israeli Golda Meir and current german chancellor Angela Merkel. But when did we have someone from a minority elected president in the West? For example an Arab french president? A Turk german chancellor? A black or latino US president? Well, it's not as easy to pop out a name like Thatcher, Meir or Merkel on the female side. I think racism and sexism in the West is still a tough issue, but my personal opinion is, that racism is a bigger problem. If anyone disagree, feel free to debate.
The second thing that's bothering me is the way Hillary Clinton runs her campain. She used to underestimate Obama, when he overtook her, she started backstabbing him, mocking his message, attacking his leadership credibility, lying about her Bosnia trip and being a second 'republican', helping McCain to attack Obama twice. This could backfire, because she's ripping apart the democratic party and it's really a shame, as Obama said. So, hopefully, Obama will survive these double-attacks and become the next president of USA.

Republicans, Democrats and Clintons

I think Bill and Hillary Clinton are destroying the democratic party. I mean, come on, who believes her commander and chief blabber? I don't think Obama is the Messiah, but he's the least phoney of all 3 candidates. It would be better for America and for the whole world, if he became the president. Not only he knows how to unite Americans, he will be able to unite the rest of the world due to his background and looks and of course his character.
America should be ashamed, in 8 years of the Bush administration, they managed to tarnish it's name even in the West. Antiamericanism is everywhere in Europe. And with Obama and his message of hope we feel this resentment will slowly disappear and the ties between USA and Europe will be strong again. We think that the unilateral actions of the USA is really damaging the world peace. Well, USA has 2 oceans on every side of their country, while we have Africa and the Middle East at our door step. We can't just start wars to solve a problem in our neighbourhood. We learned this lesson. So I hope after Irak (and Vietnam) the USA should have learned this lesson, too.
I just hope that the Clintons start backing off and endorse the democratic nominee Obama to bring about a change to the US politics and foreign relations. The world is sick of Bushes and Clintons, please, USA is not a monarchy...

Or... is it?
