PA Pride

Uncle P is lucky enough to live and work in Bucks County, PA. It's a really beautiful and diverse place, close to both Philadelphia and New York City, not at all far from the Jersey Shore and well withing driving distance of both Boston and DC.

The weather isn't always perfect (horrible humidity in the summer and winters that can run the gamut from mild to wild), but that's what happens when one lives in a valley. Still, the fall foliage rivals anything in New England (as evidenced by the picture of the Delaware River on your right) and the political climate is among the most progressive in the Commonwealth (the state of Pennsylvania is a commonwealth, as are Massachusetts; Kentucky; Virginia and Puerto Rico). I sometimes think of Bucks County as the Italy of Pennsylvania, given it's vague, scrunchy boot-like shape.

In Bucks, the County Seat is the quaint town of Doylestown, about 45 minutes north of where I live. The County Courthouse is located there, along with some terrific shops and restaurants. Uncle P's dear friend Q celebrated her 50th Birthday at the County Theatre in Doylestown and more than one of my co-workers live there.

By now you are asking "So what's your point, Uncle P?" Well, last week, Doylestown became the 17th municipality in Pennsylvania to adopt an official policy banning discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or identification (via). This means that no business in Doylestown may refuse employment or services to any person because of his or her sexual identity. Bucks has always been at the forefront of LGBT rights. New Hope (a place I've often described as "PA's P-town") has been Bucks' LGBT center for as long as I can remember and I see more rainbow stickers on the bumpers of cars in Bucks County than almost anywhere else I've traveled in the state.

And while this may not be The Gayest Thing You'll See This Week, it's certainly the best news I've shared with you in a while and yet another reason I'm proud to live where I do.

The Gayest Things You'll See This Week

An unusual Saturday Night Quickie here at Cali's R, but I came across a couple of things today that I just had to share and they were far more appropriate here, rather than the Double Z (could I sound more pretentiously hip tonight if I tried? -- And if I do, please free to slap me the next - or first - time you see me*).

Anyhoo, I know it's July and Pride month is over in the U.S., but Pride celebrations are held all over the world all year long and in Madrid, they just had their annual High Heel Race. It's been linked several places, but this clip is from Joe.My.God. I love how the British commentator calls lipstick "lippy.**"

I've watched that clip about 6 times now and it still makes me laugh like an insane hyena on mescaline -- wow, talk about disturbing analogies...

I'm heading over to the Zone in a few minutes. The church carnival thing actually kind of fell apart (it is a holiday weekend, after all), but that's okay. It allowed me to discover an intriguing new NBC show, which I'll be reviewing tomorrow, once I've watched the remaining two episodes OnDemand.

The Gayest Things You'll See This Week

First, I had a weird keyboard issue that made my PC crazy last night, and I didn't get to publish until I was at work today, using archaic versions of Windows and Explorer. I have since updated and added links to my last post about The Point, so check it out.

Second, I guess I'm a bit late in wishing everyone a Happy Pride Month, but June is far from over and there are plenty of events to attend, promote and just talk about.

Of course, if I can ask your indulgence yet once more, tickets are still vailabel for the JTMF Annual AIDS Fundraiser featuring Del Shores' Sordid Lives. What better way to celebrate Pride than to spend an evening laughing while helping several good causes?

And by now you should know how I feel about most so-called 'reality' shows. Most of them revolve around people who are willing to stoop to almost anything for their 15 minutes. I will, however admit to a certain love of "America's Got Talent." Unlike "American Idol" (which has failed to generate more than one or two genuine stars), "AGT" is open to anyone, any age with any kind of talent. Often, "talent" is left open to interpretation and some folks are admittedly awful. Sometimes one is amazed and occasionally, one is stunned. I haven't seen this week's show (it's DVR'd), but when I saw this, I had no choice but to share. I am both amazed and stunned. Ladies and germs, I give you Prince Poppycock:

Holy crap! If he's smart, Poppycock (AKA John) will do something really outre by Philip Glass or an aria from The Fly. Oh, how I have grown to love summer TV! When "The Closer" comes back, I'll be a very, very happy TV zombie.

I'm tired... the show is getting closer and I am growing madder...
